Roman Gods
The Romans had many Gods which originated from Greek mythology, except had slight personally changes and different names. There was 12 main gods (Dii Consentes), and many more minor. Each god had been based off a Greek counter part and often had an implement or a sacred animal.
Jupiter
Jupiter was the king of the gods, and he was the Romans Zeus. Jupiter was married to Juno and was the God of the sky and all things in it. He was often depicted carrying a thunderbolt which was his implement. Minevera
Minevera was the Goddess of wisdom, arts, trade and strategy. Her sacred animal was the owl to show that she was wise and she was the Greek counter part for Athena. Apollo
Apollo was the god of a lot of things, such as music, art, plague, archery, sun, light, medicine, and knowledge. His symbols were the bow and arrow and brother of Diana. Vesta
Vesta is the maiden goddess of the hearth, home and family in Roman religion. Her presence is symblified by the fires that burned at her temples. Her closest greek equivalent is Hestia. |
Juno
Juno was married to Jupiter and was the mother of Mars and Venus. She was the god of family and Greek counter part of Hera. Juno's sacred animal was a dove to show her peace. Mars
Mars was the god of war and second in importance only to Jupiter. His Implements are a special Shield and Spear. He existed not to start war but to help have a quick and decisive victory. Diana
Diana was the goddess of the hunt, the moon and child birth. Her brother was Apollo and she was one of the three goddesses who swore never to marry. Her symbols were a bow and a deer or dogs. Mercury
Mercury is the god of many things, including thieves, luck, travellers, and he is the guide for lost souls to the underworld. His greek equivalent is Hermes, and one of his symbols is flying shoes |
Neptune
Neptune was the god of, fresh water, horses, hurricanes, earthquakes and the sea. He was the Greek counter part of Poseidon. His implement was a three pronged trident. Venus
Venus was the god of love, sex, beauty, prosperity and desire. She was the Greek counter part for Aphrodite and both hers and and Aphrodite sacred sign was the Rose. Vulcan
Vulcan is the god of Fire including that of volcanoes, forges and metal working. His greek counter part is Hephaestus. His mother is Juno and he is married to Venus. Ceres
Ceres was the goddess of agriculture, fertility and motherly relationships. Her daughter is Prosperina and she is the greek equivalent of Dementer. She is the only agricultural god on the Dii Consentes for Romans. |
