Ancient Roman Slaves
The Romans didn't do any hard work, especially if you were rich. They had slaves. Slaves were usually bought from dealers or were born into slavery. Slaves had no rights and belonged entirely to their master or mistress. Besides manual labour, slaves performed many domestic labours and might be employed at highly skilled jobs and proffesions.
Many of their slaves came from wars or were bought from traders. From the war or traders, new slaves would be bought to the slave market and from their auctioned off to the highest bidder. Their masters were also allowed to kill them for no reason and would not be punished. Many slaves from Greece had a good education and were expensive to buy. They worked as tutors, doctors, and librarians for the wealthy. Well-educated government slaves could rise to positions of power. They weren't free but they had a good life. On the other side you have unskilled slaves or those whom had been punished whom had to perform hard manual labour such as work on farms, in mills, and mines. Their lives were hard and short. Slaves also started to look a lot like the citizens of Rome so one time the senate went so far as to nearly make slaves wear special clothing Slavery wasn't always for life and sometimes slaves were granted freedom as a reward for good service. Other slaves manage to save small amounts of money and but their freedom. Very occasionally a gladiator would be freed for bravely surviving many fights. Freed slaves were given the name "Freemen" Freemen found it hard to recover from the life of slavery because their slavery was philosophically scarring and traumatic
